🔪 How to Properly Sharpen an X12MF Steel Knife at a 42° Total Angle
X12MF steel is deservedly popular among utility knife owners due to its wear resistance and capability to retain a sharp cutting edge for a long time. However, even the best knife requires sharpening over time.
Why exactly 42°?
At ProstaSTAL, we sharpen X12MF steel knives at a total angle of 42° (21° per side), as this specific angle provides the optimal balance between sharpness and edge durability. Sharpening at a 42° total angle allows you to:
- ✅ Retain sharpness longer
- ✅ Reduce the risk of chipping
- ✅ Achieve a clean and confident cut
- ✅ Use the knife for a wide range of tasks
That is why this angle is perfectly suited for most heavy-duty X12MF work knives.
How to Sharpen an X12MF Knife Yourself?
For high-quality sharpening, it is recommended to use a guided sharpening system that allows you to maintain a precise angle.

Set the correct angle
Adjust your sharpening system to 21° on each side to achieve a total sharpening angle of 42°.
Try not to alter the angle during operation, otherwise the cutting edge geometry will be compromised.
Start with a coarser abrasive
If the knife is heavily dulled, begin with a coarser stone.
Work smoothly along the entire length of the cutting edge until a small burr appears.
Gradually transition to finer abrasives
For high-quality results, use several stones of varying grit values.
Each subsequent abrasive must remove the scratch marks left by the previous one.
Finalize the sharpening
Perform light passes on finishing stones without applying heavy pressure. This will allow you to achieve a smooth and razor-sharp cutting edge.
How We Sharpen Knives at ProstaSTAL?
For sharpening, we utilize six elbor (cBN) stones of different grit sizes, which allows us to achieve a consistent result and a flawlessly clean edge.
Elbor abrasives work excellently with hard steels like X12MF, ensuring precise and uniform sharpening.

What should you avoid doing?
- ❌ Do not apply excessive pressure.
- ❌ Do not alter the angle during the sharpening process.
- ❌ Do not overheat the blade on electric grinders.
- ❌ Do not try to aggressively remove a large amount of metal in a single pass.
Don't want to sharpen it yourself?
If you don't have the necessary equipment or time, you can ship your knife to ProstaSTAL. We will professionally sharpen it at the correct 42° angle, preserve the blade geometry, and return your knife fully ready for action.
